It is our belief that learning should be fun and should promote the development of individual and collective genius. It is our belief that te reo Māori together with the version of NZ history that incorporates the Māori perspective should be accessible to all tamariki. It is our belief that self awareness, self knowledge and strong sense of identity allows our tamariki - and us all - to grow more fully and effectively into our potential as effective contributors within the fields of our interests, within our communities. These beliefs form part of the modus operandi of Hei Tiki Creatives.
Music & Education
We are sisters who grew up in Edgecumbe closely surrounded by extended family, educators and musicians. Our grandmother was a teacher and six of her eight children became educators as well. It seems that as hard as we tried to avoid education as a career path, we were destined to arrive there anyway. When my second child was born in 2008 YouTube was in its early years and there were very few educational Māori language based videos for kids. Because my life's work is in Māori media it made sense that I start creating videos that my son and other whānau could use and learn from. That period essentially marks the beginning of our journey into creating Māori language media for tamariki and whānau.
The music is something else. Music was everywhere as we grew up and I think it is fair to say we probably could not live without it. Our father's father spent his life in bands as a piano player and keyboardist. He is an incredible rag and boogie-woogie player. Our mother's father was a piano player as well and his piano remained in our nan's home for many years after he passed. I believe guitar parties, Māori music and kapahaka is par for the course in life growing up in provincial NZ as part of a Māori whānau. It certainly was our norm and I guess ignited the passion we share for music and its composition, performance and broadcast.
Skip to 2016 and we are producing music and educational resources with one iwi number 1 radio hit, one Silver scrolls finalist and a bilingual music video series as a few of the achievements between us. We each have four children.
