Thanks to funding from Te Mātāwai, development on the app, Mokotube started this month.
MokoTube places in one self-customisable mobile app, all Māori language videos on YouTube, that are aimed at tamariki, taiohi and rangatahi.
Funding has been a few years in the asking, so we are grateful to te Mātāwai – Te Reo Tukutuku me te Mātāuru ki Mataatua, for giving us the putea to make it.
There will be two versions of the app, MokoTube for all tamariki everywhere, and Mokotube Mataatua (working title) for taiohi and rangatahi. MokoTube Mataatua will provide users with a Māori language based social platform along with access to all age appropriate Māori language content available on YouTube.
To make the app an experience that our tamariki and taohi/rangatahi will love, simply put, we need content. We need the content that is currently on YouTube and we need more. Much more.
We need grassroots kōrero with tamariki, the homemade haka videos, the waiata videos, the kōhanga videos, the kura videos, the gaming videos and of course the videos other content providers are making.
If it is Māori language or bilingual and made for or by tamariki, taoihi or rangatahi, then we would like to feature your content on this app and in this way increase viewership and the view-count on your content.
So creators please contact us so that we can make sure we don’t miss your content and so that we can organise tags that can be used in your videos when you upload to YouTube.
Te reo Māori content creators for Facebook or Twitch – we would like to encourage you to upload to YouTube as well. MokoTube will increase your view-count in a way that Facebook cannot, more so, your content will go straight to its intended audience.
If you are a kura, kohanga or whānau, and need help getting started with your YouTube channels, talk to us. It is a an excellent way to not only promote kohanga, kura and share your love of the reo but to whakapiki te reo.
We realise that you all might need some encouragement to get your media uploaded so watch this space for upcoming events.
We expect to launch MokoTube late this year or early in 2020.
